Viña del Mar
Viña del Mar (beach resort town) – since the Chilean capital is landlocked, those who want to go to the beach during the country’s warm months must take a 2 ½ hour car ride to the seashore. Near the regional town of Valparaiso is the famed resort known as Viña del Mar (a.k.a. “La Ciudad Jardín” – “The Garden City”). Since Chile is in the southern hemisphere, the Summer months there (from December to February) are the best time to partake in beachside activities. Because its waters are ideal for surfing, Viña del Mar has been compared to famed surfing locales like Laguna, California.
Along with the surfing, Viña del Mar is considered a less expensive vacation destination than some other well-known South American resorts, like Uruguay’s Punta del Este, and is popular with Argentines and Brazilians, who come for its family-friendly atmosphere. Media stars and cultural elite from Santiago, the Chilean capital, also come here (making this area, in effect, a Chilean version of the Hamptons in the New York area).
